CSID
Activities
The activities of the Center for the
Study of Islam & Democracy (CSID) include the following:
- Seminars and lectures at mosques, churches and think
tanks around the country by noted scholars and activists on Islam &
Democracy.
- International workshops on Islam & Democracy in
Muslim countries.
To date, CSID has held 3 workshops, in Morocco, Egypt, and Yemen, all in
October 2002. These workshops were groundbreaking in their success
in bringing together a wide collection of political actors--Islamist as
well as secularist--to discuss democracy in the Islamic world.
Additional workshops are planned in
Turkey, Algeria and Jordan in Spring 2004.
- An annual academic conference on Islam and Democracy. CSID's conferences bring together specialists, activists and
policymakers to share ideas.
Attendees and speakers have included high ranking government officials
(e.g., Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and
Labor Lorne Craner, Assistant Secretary of State for the Near East
William Burns) and internationally renowned scholars (e.g., Fathi
Osman, Tariq Ramadan, Khurshid Ahmed) and activists (e.g., Saad Eddin
Ibrahim) from the Muslim world.
